Community dynamics of ammonia oxidizing bacteria in a full-scale wastewater treatment system with nitrification stability

Xiaohui WANG, Xianghua WEN, Hengjing YAN, Kun DING, Man HU

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 1,   Pages 92-98 doi: 10.1007/s11783-010-0254-6

Abstract: To determine whether the functional stability of nitrification was correlated to a stable community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant, the AOB community dynamics in a wastewater treatment system was monitored over one year. The community dynamics were investigated using specific PCR followed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of the gene. The T-RFLP results indicated that during the period of nitrification stability, the AOB community structure in the full-scale wastewater treatment system was relatively stable, and the average change rate every 15 d of the system was 6.6%±5.8%. The phylogenetic analysis of the cloned gene showed clearly that the dominant AOB in the system was spp. The results of this study indicated that throughout the study period, the AOB community structure was relatively stable in the full-scale wastewater treatment system with functional stability of nitrification.

Protecting traditional knowledge of Chinese medicine: concepts and proposals

Changhua Liu, Man Gu

Frontiers of Medicine 2011, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 212-218 doi: 10.1007/s11684-011-0142-x

Abstract: With the development of the knowledge economy, knowledge has become one of the most important resources for social progress and economic development. Some countries have proposed measures for the protection of their own traditional knowledge. Traditional Chinese medicine belongs to the category of intangible cultural heritage because it is an important part of Chinese cultural heritage. Today the value of traditional knowledge of Chinese medicine has been widely recognized by the domestic and international public. This paper discusses the definition of traditional knowledge of Chinese medicine and its protection, and evaluates research on its classification. We review the present status of the protection of traditional knowledge of Chinese medicine and tentatively put forward some possible ideas and methods for the protection of traditional knowledge of Chinese medicine. Our goal is to find a way to strengthen the vitality of traditional Chinese medicine and consolidate its foundation. We believe that if we could establish a suitable ( is a Latin term meaning “of its own kind” and is often used in discussions about protecting the rights of indigenous peoples. Here we use it to emphasize the fact that protection of traditional knowledge of Chinese medicine cannot be achieved through existing legal means of protection alone due to its unique characteristics) system for traditional knowledge, a more favorable environment for the preservation and development of traditional Chinese medicine will ultimately be created.

Anisotropy of multi-layered structure with sliding and bonded interlayer conditions

Lingyun YOU, Kezhen YAN, Jianhong MAN, Nengyuan LIU

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 3,   Pages 632-645 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0617-4

Abstract: A better understanding of the mechanical behavior of the multi-layered structure under external loading is the most important item for the structural design and the risk assessment. The objective of this study are to propose and develop an analytical solution for the mechanical behaviors of multi-layered structure generated by axisymmetric loading, and to investigate the impact of anisotropic layers and interlayer conditions on the multi-layered structure. To reach these objectives, first, according to the governing equations, the analytical solution for a single layer was formulated by adopting the spatial Hankel transform. Then the global matrix technique is applied to achieve the analytical solution of multi-layered structure in Hankel domain. The sliding and bonded interlayer conditions were considered in this process. Finally, the numerical inversion of integral transform was used to solve the components of displacement and stress in real domain. Gauss-Legendre quadrature is a key scheme in the numerical inversion process. Moreover, following by the verification of the proposed analytical solution, one typical three-layered flexible pavement was applied as the computing carrier of numerical analysis for the multi-layered structure. The results have shown that the anisotropic layers and the interlayer conditions significantly affect the mechanical behaviors of the proposed structure.
